Valentine’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world and while it began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus, it has since become a day where most people express their love for friends and family members.
San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
Is a trip to Mexico or Italy an option? If so, Hotel Matilda is setting the table for its Supper Club that will showcase the culinary brilliance of three of Mexico’s top chefs.
Held over Valentine’s Day Weekend, on Friday, Feb. 15, the first Supper Club of the year promises to be the epicurean event of the year in San Miguel de Allende, with a multi-course feast and wine pairing in Hotel Matilda’s Moxi Restaurant that will dazzle food lovers and gourmands. The three chefs collaborating on the menu include:
Enrique Olvera: The operator of Moxi Restaurant is widely recognized as Mexico’s leading chef and one of the best in the world. A recipient of numerous culinary awards and kudos, his Mexico City restaurant, Pujol, is #36 on the San Pellegrino list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
Guillermo González Beristáin: After garnering extensive experience internationally, including with Michelin-starred restaurants in France and Spain, he returned to Mexico and opened elegant Pangea. The highly acclaimed Monterrey restaurant serves fine Mexican cuisine enhanced with French-Mediterranean touches.
Diego Hernández Velasco Baquedano: Named one of the most promising chefs of 2011 by Travel + Leisure, his wide range of experience includes stints at both Pujol and Pangea. At Corazon de Tierra (Heart of the Earth), his celebrated restaurant in Baja’s Guadalupe Valley, “the ingredient comes first before all and above all.”
The three culinary masters are developing a surprise menu for the evening. Dinner will begin at 7:00 p.m. and seating is limited to 100 people. The cost per person is 1,800 pesos, or about $142. Seating is limited to 100 persons. For more information and reservations for the Feb. 15 Supper Club, email eventos at hotelmatilda dot com.
Hotel Matilda hosts Supper Clubs several times each year in Moxi that feature famous guest chefs and original menus and wine pairings. The extravagant events, combined with Chef Olvera’s acclaimed menu in Moxi, have fired a reputation in Mexico for the hotel as a culinary innovator. Moxi for the first time brought a level of culinary sophistication to San Miguel de Allende that parallels the world-class dining of Mexico City.
“With Chef Olvera preparing his evolved and innovative Mexican cuisine, Moxi is now a must-try restaurant among foodies and gourmands,” says Hotel Matilda Director Bruce James. “The menu has a Mexican soul but an international palate, with flavors, textures, combinations and presentations that are subtly familiar yet exuberantly original.”
